Soma

SOMA-089-01, usually just called Soma, was the first, and thus far only, successful prototype of an experiment to create artificial life.

The goal of the experiment was to create beings that could do the dangerous jobs that humans and other more organic beings couldn't or wouldn't do, due to the risks involved. Unfortunately, due to the beings needing to be able to follow orders and make decisions, this involved giving them human-level intelligence and emotional capabilities.

This also meant that they had free will, and could disobey orders.
